GMAT Prep Syllabus

The Prime Gmat Prep syllabus consists of 12 lessons covering every facet of the Quantitative, Verbal, and Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) Sections of the GMAT.

Quantitative Section of the GMAT

The Quantitative section of the GMAT evaluates the GMAT test taker's mathematical skills, understanding of fundamental elementary quantitative concepts and ability to analytically and mathematically reason to interpret presented data and solve quantitative problems. The Quantitative section of the GMAT requires use of fundamental quantitative knowledge in specific aspects of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics and combinatorics. Mathematical concepts are presented in two types of questions in the Quantitative section of the GMAT: Data Sufficiency questions and Problem Solving questions.

The Quantitative section of the GMAT has 37 total questions, consisting of intermingled Data Sufficiency and Problem Solving questions, to be answered in a maximum of 75 minutes. All questions in the Quantitative section of the GMAT are multiple choice questions and are selected individually throughout the Quantitative section using the Computer Adaptive Test methodology.

Data Sufficiency Questions

Data Sufficiency questions are a unique type of quantitative question not commonly found on other standardized exams. Data Sufficiency questions consist of a question followed by two statements, which are labeled (1) and (2) and each provide additional information related to the given question. The GMAT test taker must evaluate each statement to determine whether the information given individually and collectively is sufficient to answer the posed question. Data Sufficiency questions assess the GMAT test taker's knowledge of fundamental quantitative concepts and ability to analyze a quantitative problem to determine the relevancy of provided information and the sufficiency, or lack thereof, of available information to solve the problem.

Problem Solving Questions

Problem Solving questions present a quantitative problem for the GMAT test taker to solve. The GMAT test taker must understand the posed problem and then use any provided information in the problem, in addition to knowledge of fundamental quantitative concepts, to derive a solution to the posed problem.

Verbal Section of the GMAT

The Verbal section of the GMAT evaluates the GMAT test taker's ability to understand and critically evaluate logical arguments, efficiently read and understand written passages and evaluate and correct sentences to conform to the standard written English language. The GMAT test taker is presented with three types of questions in the Verbal section of the GMAT: Critical Reasoning questions, Reading Comprehension questions and Sentence Correction questions.

The Verbal Section of the GMAT has 41 total questions, consisting of intermingled Critical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension and Sentence Correction questions, to be answered in a maximum of 75 minutes. All questions in the Verbal section of the GMAT are multiple choice questions and are selected individually throughout the Verbal section using the Computer Adaptive Test methodology.

Critical Reasoning Questions

Critical Reasoning questions assess a GMAT test taker's ability to understand, analyze, evaluate and formulate ideas related to a logical argument. Critical Reasoning questions relate to varying subject matters; however, no specific knowledge of any subject matter is presumed or required to answer any Critical Reasoning question.

Sentence Correction Questions

Sentence Correction questions present a GMAT test taker with a written sentence in which part or all of the sentence is underlined. The GMAT test taker is required to evaluate the provided sentence, with specific focus on the underlined portion of the sentence, and determine whether the sentence conforms to the grammatical rules and stylistic conventions of standard written English. In cases where the underlined portion of the provided sentence is contains an error, the GMAT test taker is required to choose an alternative to the underlined portion of the sentence which corrects any error and confirms to standard written English.

Reading Comprehension Questions

Reading Comprehension questions require a GMAT test taker to efficiently read, understand, analyze and apply information and ideas presented in a related written passage. Reading Comprehension passages relate to varying subject matters including social science, physical and biological science and economic and business related topics; however, no specific knowledge of any subject matter is presumed or required to answer any Reading Comprehension question. The size of each Reading Compression passage ranges from only a short paragraph or two to up to nearly 500 words. Each Reading Comprehension passage accompanies a set of Reading Comprehension questions, all of which relate to and can be answered from information directly contained in or inferred from the passage.

GMAT Prep Syllabus: Verbal Section

Verbal Lesson 1: Intro to Logic

The Formal Logic lesson focuses on an array of topics related to formal logic and the construction of logical arguments. The content of this lesson is rarely taught in other GMAT prep programs, giving Prime Gmat Prep students a significant competitive advantage in achieving GMAT success. While the GMAT does not specifically test formal logic, a mastery of the fundamentals of formal logic is instrumental in achieving a top GMAT score. The ability to implement advanced concepts of formal logic is significantly valuable not only on Critical Reasoning problems, but also on other types of GMAT problems, including Reading Comprehension problems, the Analytical Writing Assessment, and even Data Sufficiency problems in the Quantitative section of the GMAT.

In the Analytical Writing Assessment section of the GMAT, the GMAT test taker is presented with two essay topics, one of which requires an Analysis of an Argument and the other of which requires an Analysis of an Issue. The GMAT test taker is given 30 minutes for each of the Analysis of an Argument and Analysis of an Issue essays to read and understand the essay topic and related questions, brainstorm a response and finally type and submit an essay into the testing computer.

Analysis of an Argument

During the Analysis of an Argument portion of the AWA section, the GMAT test taker is presented with and must analyze the underlying reasoning of an argument and write an essay critiquing the presented argument.

Analysis of an Issue

During the Analysis of an Issue portion of the AWA section, the GMAT test taker is presented with and must analyze an issue or opinion and write an essay explaining one's agreement or disagreement with the provided issue or opinion, including relevant supporting explanations and examples underlying the GMAT test taker's point of view.
